TWe drove to Tel Arad. The word “Tel” in Hebrew means “mound”. Many times these mounds are the result of many cities built on top of each other. One city would be built, destroyed by enemies, and another civilization would come along and build another city on that same site, and this would be repeated many times. As far back as 5,000 years ago, a large Canaanite city stood at this site. This city probably existed in the time of Abraham. During King Hezekiah’s reign, Arad was told to destroy their temple, since the only temple was to be in Jerusalem. But they did not want to do this so instead covered it with earth. Discovered thousands of years later, the remains of this temple are a treasure for bibical  archaeologists. Still evident is the holy of  Holies and the city gate. That is where people would hang out and important business would be conducted.

House of Caiaphas

It is believed that this was the place where Caiaphas the High Priest of Israel resided. A church is now on this spot. It was here that Jesus was tried by the Sanhedrin and where Peter denied Jesus. We were able to enter the pit where it is believed that Jesus was held. And the steps that Jesus must have descended down to the city to be tried again are still visible. Extremely moving. Qumran and Jerico

 Qumran caves in the distance This is at the edge of the Judean wilderness and served as a study site foe the Essenes, which  were a Jewish sect in Jesus day. These men spent most of their time copying the Hebrew Old Testament. The Roman army destroyed it in 68 AD and in 1947 some of these scrolls that had been hidden in jars in caves in the area were found. These are now known as the Dead Sea scrolls and provide a lot of information about life at that time as well as accurate copies of Old Testament books. caves where the scrolls were found Jericho As we travelled north of the Dead Sea we crossed into the “West Bank” which is an area controlled by the Palestinians. We came to Jericho, which is the oldest known city in the world, with archaeological evidence that dates back to at least 9000BC. Wailing Wall

Western (wailing) wall This is the retaining wall of the huge platform where both Solomon and Herod built their temples.  Only a portion of this wall was preserved by the Romans when they destroyed the city in 70AD. This is a most holy spot for the Jewish people because it is the closest location to the holy of holies. They gather at this spot to pray, write prayers on little pieces of paper and stick them in the cracks of the wall.  They have their prayer books in which they recite specific prayers for specific times of the day and specific days. When they pray they sway back and forth. This is to show God that they are alive, human and not a statue so God will listen to their prayer. In times past they would gather there to wail the loss of the holy city and the destruction of the temple. Security now is very tight in this place and everyone needs to be scanned before they can enter the area. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays they have bar mitzvah and the entire fam...
